It takes a village to care for a teenage daughter. This does not seem an inappropriate adaptation of the ancient African notion of raising children. It does not seem likely that the deep wisdom in the simple words of early Africans would have been confined to boys and would have neglected not girls.
I see virtue in “personal activism,” that is activism of one person-to-another activism). I recognize a small act of compassion of one person to another larger than big earth-shaking ideas. As a small act of personal activism, I offer a series of videos and articles on the subject of polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS). To elaborate my simple notion of tribal daughters, I offer some reflections on the subject of personal activism in a series videos and articles entitled Our Shared African Grandmothers. Links for FREE ACCESS to these viewing and reading materials are offered at the end of this article.
Our Tribal Daughter
When our teenage daughters ( our “tribal daughters”) appear sluggish beyond an occasional bad day, what can we do:
1. We can simply accept they are what they are, teenagers; or
2. They have conflicts with their dad, or worse with their moms; or
3. They are becoming simply lazy; or
4. They are going through physiological hormonal shifts; or
5. Their menstrual cycles are off; or
6. They have friend problems at school; or
7. They have school grade difficulties or teacher conflicts.
Or
We can learn something about the true nature of their suffering and do something compassionate and intelligent for them, or give them a diagnosis of polycystic ovarian syndrome and prescribe for them synthetic hormones and/or a diabetes drug Metformin.
