Athletes learn fast that when muscles their are not well-conditioned for athletics and they do vigorous exercise rapidly, the muscles quickly reach a point that they cannot support intense exercise. Athletes then have to stop exercise and rest their muscles until they can begin again. The scientific explanation of this is simple: With athletics, muscles need to generate energy rapidly with oxygen. When lungs cannot supply sufficient oxygen to the muscles fast enough, the muscles build acids (such as lactic acid) in their tissue fast and have to stop.
