Majid Ali, M.D.
Paxil and Prozac
The decision to use or decline antidepressant drugs during early pregnancy requires careful assessment of all clinical and laboratory data. This decision must be made after full discussion between the patient, her family, and doctors. I offer this short article to assist individuals in making an informed decision.
The results of the study summarized below should be in the context of other aspects of Paxil, Prozac, and other antidepressants.
British Medical Journal
A study of nearly 28,000 women found an increase of 2 to 3.5 times more frequently among infants of women taking paroxetine or fluoxetine early in pregnancy, though the absolute risk is low.
By contrast, no increased risk for birth defects was linked to other antidepressants including citalopram (Celexa, Lexapro, and Zoloft.
Birth defects noted included defects in the heart, brain, skull, and abdomen.
