An Article of Voices From the Pre-East Course

Goethe’s Hodgepodge of Fallacy and Violence

Johann Wolfgang Goethe (1749 – 1832) was a German poet, dramatists, anatomist, botanists, and   statesman. He derided tenets of Christian theology and history as a “hodgepodge of fallacy and violence” He celebrated human sexuality  as a subject of lofty poetic and artistic depiction.

Goethe believed in the absolute truth of whatever he wrote (and he wrote much). Ralph Waldo Emerson, an American individualists and essayist included Goethe as one of his six “representative men,” (others were Plato, Shakespeare, Goethe, Montaigne, Swedenborg, and Napolean).

World War I and World War II Bear Testimony to Nietzsche’s  Truth, Don’t They?

Frederick Nietzsche (1844–1900) recognized that  nihilism caused by his “modernity” was responsible for the death of God. His problem: belief in God was nihilistic and so was being an atheist. His solution: Übermensch meaning above-human, superman, superhuman, ultraman, ultrahuman, and beyond-man, You choose.”

World War I and World War Ii bear testimony to his truth, don’t they?

Heidegger’s Hitler

Martin Heidegger (1889-1976) Heidegger championed Hitler’s cause publicly and seemed to think that Germans were the Nietzsche’s superhuman. In later life, privately he decried Nazism. He was considered to be an existentialist but seemed to have excused himself as well.
