FDA Approves Libido Drug for Women With Tests on Male Subjects
Two FDA’s Firsts
When approving Addyi, the first drug for increasing libido and sexual gratification of women, FDA acknowledged that drug-alcohol interactions were problems that had not been delineated, as was the case with sudden drop in blood pressure. FDA also ackowledged that the drug-maker’s study of Addyi for these purposes included 23 men and only two women. This was also another first in FDA approval of new drugs.
How Does Addyi Work?
Addyi (flibanserin by its chemical name) acts on serotonin receptors in the brain, and so works in ways similar to Paxil, Prozac, and related drugs. Time will tell what serious adverse effects might Addyi share with other serotonin-acting drugs.
