Marijuana, Depression, and Memory Loss
Majid Ali, M.D.
My Conversion With a Parient About Marijuana Therapy for Depression
“What do you think of marijuan for me?” she asked.
“It is an option,” I replied..
“Will you write a letter for me for it?”
“Yes, for you I will.”
“For me? Not for everyone.”
“Why?”
“I don’t think it is a good for everyone with a long history of depression.”
“Why not?”
“It has some negative effects as well.”What”
“Memory loss.”
“But you know I have memory issues.”
“Yes, I do.”
“You will still consider it.”
“I have look at the total picture. Marijuana has the potential of causing memory problem. And so does depression. My sense is that in your case continued depression might be a bigger memory threat.”
“So, do you think I should consider it?”
“Yes, it is an option. But it is important that we get advice from a psychopharmacologist about other options and also from a doctor who has experience with marijuana for treating depression as well as marijuan-related memory concerns.”
My Point
The choice of therapies for long-standing depression which has not responded to other therapies must be individualized for the specific needs for an individual. It must not be influenced by generalizations, ideology, or belief not tempered by extended true-to-life experience.
