Double Mastectomy for Breast Atypia – Beware of Unnecessary Mastectomy

Beware of Unnecessary Mastectomy Series
This week I saw a 96-year-old woman. She told me she double mastectomy done about forty earlier because she had breast atypia. The term atypia is diagnosed by pathologists and generally understood well only by surgeons. It was surprising to hear a 96-year pronounce the word precisely. She was a clear-headed legally blind woman who gave a clear and detailed account of her past health events, including removal of uterus and ovaries by one doctor some decade earlier which was considered unneeded by another doctor.
I decided not to problem the matter and changed the subject.
Breast atypia is not breast cancer and surgery for it is utterly unnecessary.
